Namibia

Namibia is a country of wide open space, vast desert and mountain vistas and a palette of pastel colours. It has a German heritage where Afrikans is spoken almost exclusively and like Botswana a small and thinly spread population. After Botswana I knew what was in store for us but I believe it was an unexpected surprise to most other riders. One thing that has surprised me this entire trip is the little that many riders know of the countries through which we have passed but then some did come...

We were both looking forward to seeing more than our last visit when we stayed only in the Okavango Delta. Botswana is usually described in terms like dry, arid, blah blah, well not for us.

Victoria Falls , at 2 days the second longest scheduled rest of the 4 months and Cheryl was flying up from Johannesburg to spend the time with us. We planned 2 nights at Matetsi Water Lodge in Zimbabwe and the final night at the Royal Livingstone Hotel in Zambia. We were curious about what to expect from Matetsi even though it was an ‘andbeyond’ Lodge as things in Zimbabwe have been pretty tough to say the least for some time thanks to Mad Bob. We need not have worried. The ...

Zambia and Malawi used to be part of the same country and it shows. There really is not a lot of difference from the seat of a bicycle to be honest no fabulously differing cultures or tribes but here are a few bits and pieces as i experienced it.
“How are you” this is the most practiced expression by the children roadside here.
Visiting with the Locals

I had spent a few days in Malawi cycling by myself while Patrick had the Malaria and now he was back on the bike he was riding half days while recovering. We were riding with Annalise when she spotted one of he many signs for an Orphanage. These are quite common in this part of Africa (both the signs and the orphanages) but i'm ashamed to admit my years of 'developing world' travel experience has made me a little cynical as to their validity. We 3 decided however to take a break and pull over...

Rest day in Windhoek

we arrived here a little damp yesterday after a wet ride across Botswana

Un-seasonal rain we were told, in reality constant thunder storms that went on for hours a day, including hail! This was supposed to be the arid Kalahari region of Botswana!

To add to our bad weather, the riding in Botswana included some of our longest days (including the longest at 208kms) on flat straight roads. The scenery unchanging, just flat scrubby countryside. With a tiny...

The day I started feeling unwell with Malaria was our second day in Malawi.

After leaving Tanzania where it had been so amazing we thought it would be hard to follow on but Malawi was a real surprise. We didn't spend a great deal of time there (it is a pretty small country) and as soon as we crossed the border it was evident we were back in an economically very poor country. The road traffic dropped off immediately and foot and bicycle traffic increased greatly. While the crowds here were again very curious at each of our campsites we didn't suffer the issues t...
