| Zambezi Zone - Lilongwe to Victoria Falls |
|
This section starts in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. We are assured it’s a pleasant day’s ride west into Zambia, a country named after the fabled Zambezi River. Zambia promises few tourists, fantastic scenery, friendly people and lots of cycling. I know, it sounds kind of ‘generic’ but we’re certain it will be another amazing country chock full of fascinating people and culture. Once in Zambia we will ride through thinly populated countryside along the ‘Great East Road’. A road of tar, good in some places, pot-holed in others but tar all the same. We pass through the small but busy town of Chipata and a dot on the map called Petauke. We cross the vast width of the Luangwa River, one of the main tributaries to the Zambezi River at, surprise surprise ... the Luangwa Bridge (apparently the only large bridge on the entire Great East Road) and continue past the Lower Zambezi National Park which is becoming known for natural splendor and it’s wildlife, before pedaling on into Lusaka the boom town Zambian capital for a day of rest or exploration. From Lusaka the next major stop is one of the trips highlights, Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya ( the mist that thunders ) and at approx 1,700 metres wide and 100 metres deep a truely awesome spectacle of nature. The falls are located near the town of Livingstone, on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The last time we were at ‘Vic Falls’ we indulged in pure ( discounted ) luxury at the 5 star Royal Hotel Livingstone, this time something a little different is anticipated. We have two days of rest here at ‘Vic Falls’ and with all the adventure activities available are looking forward to some high adrenaline fun. We did get the timing wrong again tho - it’s peak water level. So I guess we will have to return on another occasion to visit Livingstone Island and swim in the Devils Pool!
