As we leave Windhoek and head southwest towards Cape Town, it’s all dirt and sand roads across Namibia’s central plateau. We then descend down into the Namib Desert to visit the world’s highest sand dunes at Sossusvlei.

This is a return for Wayne and a first for me! We will experience this amazing area with a dawn visit which Wayne tells me is not only the perfect time for viewing but also the perfect time of the year.

From here the route is south across the severe, yet beautiful scenery of Namibia. We also pass the Fish River Canyon shortly before arriving at the Orange (Sengu) River and our final border crossing into South Africa.

Our emotions should be mixed here with the excitement building each day as we head down the ‘Skeleton Coast’ getting closer and closer to Cape Town, yet sad that this incredible experience and journey is coming to an end.

We have a final piece of sand and corrugated road from Vredendal to Elandsbaai as we descend to the rugged coast. Here we should start to experience the late autumn cape weather, cool and foggy.

With the weather to remind us of our destination ahead, we should start to see the majestic outline of Table Mountain, and the end to this life changing experience.

We will probably be pedaling that little bit harder today knowing we have friends waiting at the finish line. We have our final convoy ride into Cape Town, a city that means much to me, and a place Wayne and I are looking forward to returning to.

We will at last cross the finishing line, and prepare for one very memorable celebration!
